"See? William likes her," Michael stood to walk over and pick Jeannie up. She bit his finger again, so he straightened and gave William a sheepish grin. "She doesn't really like me."

"Mine." Tom said sulkily, holding out his arms for Jeannie. The puppy snuggled into him, licking the underside of his chin happily. He ignored the rest of the world as he played with his puppy.

Oh fuck. The shirt. He quickly took it off while Tom was busy with something else.

"Her mother attacked Tom." Michael thought it was a better way of saying 'I shot the mother and now this puppy is an orphan'.

Michael raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything more.

Jeannie barked happily as Tom rubbed her portly stomach. "Gonna take care of you girl." He murmured, playing with her soft ears. He suddenly raised his eyes to look at William. "You want me sectioned."

"I - what? Who said that?" He tired to review the previous conversations in his head. "Oh - oh. Did you talk to Mikey? Because he was pissed off at me and Gabe and...well still, I never said that!" He lowered himself at Tom's level. "I don't want you sectioned, Tom."

But as he remembered everything that had been said, he inevitably thought about how Tom had intended to hurt him. Should I...?

Michael scratched his head, and didn't move back. He was stuck in another awkward moment. He decided to let Tom and William work this one out too.

"Mikey?" Tom's eyes widened. "You spoke to Mikey?" He stared into William's open hazel eyes. "I heard you. Or maybe Gabe. But I heard you say it."

Lie. "Then you heard wrong, Tom." He cupped his cheek with his hand. He couldn't have heard, we were too far.

"But I heard things," he risked. "I had a good chat with Mikey. Why..." He took a deep breath, not sure if he was ready for an answer. "Why did you board this plane in the first place?"

Michael let his eyes wander away from the two of them. It wasn't exactly privacy but he didn't want to move too far away just in case.

"You'll be angry with me..." Tom whined. Growing bored, Jeannie jumped off his lap and trotted over to Michael, nuzzling him quietly.

Michael sat to play with the little dog. She nipped at his fingers playfully as he picked her up and placed her on the ground away from him and facing in the opposite direction so she'd have to run back. He looked around for a piece of driftwood to use as a toy.

"Everyone gets bored of me anyway." Tom whispered. "I was going to go to one of your concerts..." He trailed off, biting his lip. A little while away, Jeannie nuzzled Michael again and sunk her teeth into the driftwood he held out.

"Why a gun?" he continued for him, his voice rising. "Mikey said you wanted to hurt me. Look at me, Tom. Tell me it's not true."

"Not you." Tom whispered, suddenly gripping William's hand. "Never you." He closed his eyes, recollecting himself. "Mikey doesn't know... I wanted to shoot myself. At one of your shows." Tears flowed down his cheeks again and he pulled away. "There! You hate me now!" Jeannie went flying past as she chased after the driftwood.

"Tom...I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked. I should have trusted you..." He grabbed the smaller man's shoulders. "I don't want to lose you, Tom. Please, don't ever think about doing something similar again."

"I'm fed up with being a burden to everyone." Tom rubbed his eyes. "You guys after the alley thing, 504 after the bipolar thing, you, Gabe and Michael now... I'm no use to anyone. And I want to be." He smiled softly at William, leaning forward to rub his nose against the younger man's.

Tom kept looking, spots of colour in his cheeks. He shuffled closer to William, staring at him like a small child in love with a teacher. Jeannie went sailing past them again.

Why did he have to be so damn cute? I was better off with him not caring about me. Now I'm afraid I'll break his heart.
He gently kissed Tom's lips. "There."

He glanced at Michael, momentarily giving him a I-hope-you-told-Tom-what-you-were-supposed-to-tell-him look.
