Michael looked back at William with a You-caught-me expression before quickly returning his attention to the puppy. He knew William had wanted him to talk over things with Tom, and he knew he'd failed at it.

Tom saw the looks that passed between the two men. He flopped down on the sand, staring at the pale blue sky. "Come back Sunday..." he sang. "Everyday's a Monday, now that you're gone..." Jeannie barked and trotted up to him, nibbling at the ends of his hair.

William looked at Tom, and felt horribly sorry for him. What was happening was beyond his control, yet he was guilty. He was misleading Tom into thinking that his love was exclusive for him.

He let Tom play with his new pet, and walked up to Michael.
"Please tell me you did. Please."

Michael felt his stomach clench and all his muscles tighten as Tom sang. It just made everything that much more awkward for him.

"He got attacked by a wild animal what was I supposed to do?" He said quietly. Not actually a good excuse really...

Tom's sharp ears picked up what they were talking about. He frowned. "Come on girl." The guitarist whispered to Jeannie. "Race you!" The man and his dog sprinted towards the sea, laughing and barking.

William ignored Tom.
"Oh please. You had plenty of time." I used that time. Why couldn't you?
"Unless...maybe your answer changed?"

"I-" Michael's voice caught, but fuck, why did William have to know everything?

He smiled. "It's alright, dude. Don't worry."
In that case, no need to t-...ah, I'm just being selfish again. Why should I have everything? Tom probably deserves better than me anyways.

Jeannie yapped and barked until her master saw what she was looking at. "Hey, what's that, girl?" Tom waded into the salt water, wincing. He wrapped his hand around the object's neck.

"But don't you love him?" Michael tried to read William's face. "I'd never... You know..."

"Hey, a guitar!" Tom laughed, dragging it ashore. Jeannie barked at it suspiciously. "I wonder whose it is..." Or was.

He shrugged. "If you love someone, you want what's best for them - right? When Tom and I talked..." He turned his head and looked at the sea. "When we talked, he was still confused about his feelings. And that's okay. I can live with that. But I wouldn't want him to miss a chance to be with you, you know? If he happens to love..."

Tom's laughing distracted him. "Tom, what are y...oh my god." He rushed at his side.

Michael stared in shock before joining them, amazed at the way Tom kept finding things. "It's got all the strings." Lucky...

Tom tipped it upside down, deftly balancing the neck on his good shoulder. "Full of water though. It'll swell. Don't know what the sound'll be like." Jeannie yapped, angry that she wasn't allowed to play with her new toy.

"Why don't you try?" William suggested, eager to find out if the instrument worked properly.

Michael looked at the guitar skeptically, pretty sure that with the water damage it would need a lot of work to ever be returned to its former state. "It looks like it's all in one piece. I wonder what else made it," He looked at the water, wondering what else was going to be drifting to shore soon.

Tongue poking out his mouth, Tom sat down. Then he realised. "I only have one arm. Well, that works." he frowned, before gently playing the open strings. "Ouch." He winced. "That sounds terrible." He put it back down on the ground and Jeannie wriggled into the hole in the centre. "Uhh... ok." He blinked.

William laughed. "She likes it."
He carefully picked up the guitar, and sat in the sand with the instrument in his lap. "I want to try."
Unconsciously, his fingers started moving along to the melody Gabe had hummed earlier that day.

"Wait a second, William," Michael carefully reached down and extracted the puppy from the hollow in the acoustic guitar. "There."

"My hero!" Tom said in a fake gushing voice, plucking the puppy from his hands and kissing Michael flamboyantly on the cheek. "Death by guitar... I was under the impression that was being forced to listen to Wax On Radio..." He laughed again, hand covering his mouth, as though he was scared Mikey would attack him at any minute.

William's fingers moved more rapidly accross the strings, accelerating the rhythm of the song.

I wish Gabe could hear this.

"I guess the damage isn't as bad as it could have been." William's playing sounded a little off because of the warped wood but no as bad as it could have been.

"Hmm..." Tom mumbled his agreement, a troubled look on his face. Jeannie curled up beside him, panting. He leant his head on the sand. "Finding fingers as they offer the hand, to help me stand, to life me from emptiness..." He crooned to his puppy. "You know, girl? I think that song was written about me."

There it was again. Another emotion Michael couldn't pin down with words, but he was just a guitarist. He just knew he couldn't so what William wanted him to.
