All Tom had were the weapons in his pocket. The knowledge in his head. The common sense that he'd discovered after leaving the teenaged years. Faint memories and confused feelings.

He pushed past trees, places he'd never been before. The sun struggled in through the choking branches, attempting to dry his soft hair. He kept on going.

He'd have to make a fire soon. That would give away his position. He had no Jeannie to help him scout. Everything, everything that he was, everything that he will be. It's all gone. All been taken from him, and it was up to him to make amends.

Tom hacked away at some of the branches, using his bad arm to catch them. He carried them peculiarly to the small fire he was building up, raking over the embers until they caught. He jumped back slightly.

With his penknife, he cut slivers of meat off the pig he'd killed. He placed them on flat stones and then put them close to the fire, keeping an eye on them.

As he stoked the fire, images of the people he had left rose unbidden to his mind, flowing in the embers. Tears sparked in his eyes.

He turned over the meat, crying softly to himself.

"Tom!" William shouted again. He could now perceive smoke from between the trees, confirmed that he was getting closer to a fire. "Tom!"

Tom's eyes widened and he knew he had to act quickly. He kicked sand onto the fire and threw the meat away, dragging the carcass behind a bush. Whoever it was would easily be able to outrun him, so he hid.

The fire was out, but smoke was still present in the air. "He was there a moment ago," William whispered to himself. "It had to be Tom."

"Tom!" he shouted once more, hoping to get an answer. "Please..."

William hid his face in his hands and stood there, crying.

William sat down. His legs couldn't support him anymore. He sobbed and attempted to dry his cheeks of all tears, even though he hadn't managed to stop crying yet.

"I'm alone. Fucking alone. I had everything but I messed up."

I lost Gabe and Tom. What do I have left? There's no band, no fame, nothing.

Tom silently shaved a sliver of bark off the tree.

His vison blurry, William tried to grab what had fallen feets away from him. He read the inscription, and cried some more.

"You're hurting me now!" He whispered, "I lost you both because I was afraid of doing that..."

Tears running down his cheeks, Tom threw it back. He felt so helpless, so weak.

William read the second message, but didn't try to find where it came from. He could barely see ahead of himself.

"I'm scared too, but I know we can make it. I want to be with you, even if that means getting hurt. I never stopped loving you and I don't think I can."
